Favorite things

Today I’m just sharing a few things that make me happy or are touchstones for me.

The Kiss, Auguste Rodin.

The Kiss, Auguste Rodin

And this, one of my favorite quotes. I still remember sitting at a restaurant with my best friend when we discovered we were reading the same book (with this quote in it), and started to mention the passage at the exact same time:

There is a fraternity of us, the abyss walkers. In our eyes, the world is divided by it, made up of those who walk frail, careening rope bridges over the abysses and those who do not. We know each other. I do not think it is a conscious thing with us, this knowing, at least not most of the time, or we would flee from each other as from monsters. It is an animal thing. It is only on that wild old neck-prickling level that we meet. It is only in our eyes that we acknowledge that our twin exhalations have touched and mingled. Sometimes, though not often, one of the others, the non-abyss people, will know us too. You may even know the feeling yourself; you may have met someone about whom otherness clings like miasma; you can feel it on your skin though you can’t name it. When that happens, you have met one of us. You may even be one of us, down deep and in secret. The other half of the world, the solid, golden half, the non-abyssers…they feel nothing under their feet but solidity. They inherit the earth. We inherit the wind. –from Outer Banks by Anne Rivers Siddons

I can’t leave you without a song, can I? This one has been my favorite since the first time I heard it, on a road trip to Montana in my Jeep, ten years ago.

Those are two more of my favorite things, which now require photos:

My Jeep (now gone)

in Montana (still there, I believe)

Anne Rivers Siddons, gorgeous scenery . . . favorite things indeed.

Oh man, that quote is incredible. Do you have it on your blog? Because I read it somewhere recently and didn’t know it was from Anne Rivers Siddons. I’ve loved her books in the past, and then got dumped on for reading them by my snootier friends. Now that I have all this eddycation behind me, I’m going to go back to them.

Jane, it’s on my Quotes page, which you can access under Pages in the sidebar.

I’ve met with some flak myself about reading her books, but I just don’t care. The woman can tell a story.

Geez, it’s bloggers like you who make the rest of us feel shallow!

You’re like Oprah with your Favorite Things page. Great peek into your window.

Nicole P April 5, 2008 at 6:50 pm

Yes, I use to own a jeep wrangler.

And yes, I use to live in Montana.

Cool car. Gorgeous state.

Oh I love that song so much 🙂 Those photos are stunning! Thank you for sharing all of this.

That Madge, she’s a sweetie! 🙂

OK, this commonality thing..it is making me a bit …”music cue of the Twilight Zone music” freaked. I just LOVE Anne River Siddons. She’s from Georgia and I JUST CAME ACROSS my notes on a lecture she gave that I attended in the boxes that I’ve been going through. There are no coincidences….

Thanks for sharing some of your favorites!

Nope, I think you’re wrong, I think Montana is gone.

That last picture takes my breath away. From the time I was very small I saw pictures of Montana and said “I want to live there.” Of course, now I’m older and have a very strong dislike for cold…so perhaps we’ll settle a bit farther south. 🙂

I just melted in delight into all of this.

Neva April 6, 2008 at 6:10 am

I think that mountain is still there as well….although I have never seen it in person! Love your posts….you write very well…and by that I mean…..you write in a way that makes one want to get to the end but not really!! Thanks for dropping by….

Milena April 6, 2008 at 8:23 am

What a quote! Loved it. Sorry to say this is the first time I’ve ever read anything by Rivers Siddons. That Rodin sculpture is one of my favorites too. Something to do with how she melts into him and where that hand of his anchors her. Sarah, well, what can I say, she is a favorite also. Saw her live once. So amazing. Your jeep, I read about over at Cce’s but, seeing you in front of it with that big smile on your face, completely colors in the longing you spoke of feeling for your car.
Never been to Montana. This photo makes me wish that were not so.

Wonderful post. Great things to love.

Thank you for stopping by my blog and for your kind comment.

Akelamalu April 6, 2008 at 11:05 am

The Kiss is one of my favourite sculptures. Love the photograph of the mountains – it’s stupendous.

Lisa April 6, 2008 at 12:39 pm

That is a beautiful photo.
I want to go to Montana NOW.

Autumn April 6, 2008 at 3:14 pm

Love it! And I’m adding the book to my wish list- that’s a terrific quote!

Crazycath April 6, 2008 at 4:50 pm

Oh Lord! Montana is beautiful! Does it really look like that? Breath taking.

Love the photo with the jeep – is that you? Couldn’t get the song – got an error but the statue as well – yep see why you like that too (I do).

Good to see you looking at positive stuff. Thanks for sharing these. The quote is fantastic – sent shivers up my spine.

Carolyn April 6, 2008 at 9:46 pm

Excellent! Thanks for sharing all this beautiful stuff. Rodin’s The Kiss is amazing. As is that quote. I’ve never heard it before, but it’s extraordinary.

Hope you had a wonderful weekend. There’s an award over at my place for you…

Madge April 7, 2008 at 5:34 am

oooohhhh!! i love that quote. i’m reading that book again. and posting about it, i think. i know no one will read this because it’s like the 27th quote and you’ve posted again. i’m giddy with the hell of work. that’s what i am.

Brenda April 7, 2008 at 9:28 am

The Rodin sculpture–one of my favorite memories was visiting the Metropolitan Museum of Art with you and gazing at this lovely creation. All love should be so passionate. If it’s not, something needs to be done about it.

Ahhh…. Montana. Going to the Sun Road is one of my favorite trips. I’ve found a place in Utah that is beautiful in a different way. Probably two of my favorite places in the entire world.
